Electrical Stimulation (E-stim)

Electrical Stimulation, or E-stim, uses electricity to stimulate muscles to contract. It can be used to strengthen muscle, increase endurance, re-educate muscle and nerve after injury or surgery, and maintain muscle strength when a joint or limb cannot be moved. A small box with knobs to set the strength and frequency of the electrical signal connects to wires that are placed on the skin. Fop example, wired pads placed under a cast send a signal to the muscle and cause it to contract. Repeated contractions exercise the muscle to reduce atrophy while the leg is in the cast. When the cast is finally removed the patient can resume normal activity much sooner because the muscles weren't allowed to weaken during the time the bone was healing.
