Yeast Otitis (Ear Infection)

Print Version

These purple bowling pin -shaped organisms are yeast organisms. Yeast infection is the most common type of ear infection we see and the second most common type of skin infection. We diagnose it by smearing some ear discharge or greasy skin oil or dandruff flakes onto a slide, staining it and then examining it under a microscope. Call us if your pet ever has red, itchy or flakey skin or ears, is scratching or shaking its head or smells like sour bread dough.
