GDV (Bloat)

Gastric Dilation and Volvulus, or GDV, is one of the deadliest diseases of dogs. Every dog owner should know the symptoms and be prepared to take emergency action. If not surgically corrected, GDV can be fatal within as little as 30 minutes, though you usually have an hour or two to get your dog to an emergency clinic. GDV occurs most commonly in large breed dogs with deep, narrow chests, but also occurs in some breeds you wouldn’t expect, such as the Shar-pei and the Basset hound. In some breeds, such as the Great Dane, as many as 40% of dogs are at risk. Learn about diagnosis, treatment and prevention in this video.
